A History of the Brighton Workhouses

Drawing of the front elevation of the old Brighton Workhouse

13 Brunswick Square, Hove, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

This talk is about the ‘other side’ or ‘hidden history’ of Brighton rather than the one of popular imagination: that of the high lifestyle of the rich and famous during the years of royal patronage. For over 200 years the town’s workhouses illustrated the jarring reality of the poverty and squalor of life for many inhabitants.

The two main workhouses were at Church Hill and Elm Grove, and there was also the children’s industrial school at Warren Farm. Through extracts from the rootless tramping poor and the indigenous poor, we will hear the voice of some of the forgotten lives of Brighton.

A Walk on the Wilds’ Side

Meet at the Dolphin Fountain in the Old Steine (opposite Marlborough House), Old Steine, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 1NX

Amon Henry Wilds was an architect/developer who was active in Brighton during the Regency and early Victorian periods. Largely because of incomplete historiography, he is less highly regarded than his contemporary Charles Busby, though he was, without a doubt, the most prolific Brighton architect of his day and left a huge legacy in terms of large scale urban developments, townscapes, public buildings and small groups of houses.

David Robson is the joint author of the "Guide to the Buildings of Brighton" (1986) and a former Professor of Architecture in the University of Brighton. His "Walk on the Wilds' Side" makes its way from the Dolphin Fountain in the Steine via Regency Square and Oriental Place to the linked villas of Montpelier Crescent.

All Saints stands as one of the finest churches of the 19th century Gothic Revival and the creation of two remarkable men: Thomas Peacey, the first Vicar of modern-day Hove, and John Loughborough Pearson, one of the principal architects of the period. It is listed Grade I and is the largest and most costly of Pearson's great town churches, exceeded in size only by his two cathedrals of Truro and Brisbane. It has one of the richest arrays of Christian iconography of the period and its furnishings of carved stone and woodwork, together with the great scheme of stained glass created by the pre-eminent firm of Clayton and Bell are of an extraordinary high quality. It has always been highly regarded as a building: Nikolaus Pevsner described it as 'superb and cathedral-like'.

All Saints’ Church, Patcham

All Saints Church, Church Hill, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 8YE

Come and visit our 12th Century church with its fascinating Doom Painting, medieval memorial and gravestones in beautiful Patcham Village

Refreshments will be available in the Church Centre

The present church has a history dating back to Saxon times, (possibly as early as the 700s). There are striking similarities with other Sussex Downland churches nearby, such as Pyecombe and Clayton, in terms of construction and overall design. It is built in flint which was widely used for building construction in Sussex in the middle ages, with sections of the present building dating from as early as the 12th century. All Saints was listed as Grade 2* in 1952 and is the Parish Church of Patcham. In the nave of the church and positioned over the chancel arch is a rare 13th century Last Judgement or Doom Painting, whitewashed over at the time of the purges of the Reformation then rediscovered during renovations in 1880-1883

Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue

6 Lansdowne Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1FF

Shalom and welcome to Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue. ZSTa worked with the Synagogue to complete this imaginative, inspirational and contemporary refurbishment. Creating a welcoming multi-purpose space for religious services, festivals and special commemorations, principally for the local Jewish community while welcoming all faiths.
The existing building, originally a 19th century gymnasium, was converted into a Progressive synagogue in 1937. Within a designated Conservation Area but not historically listed, the proposal for rebuilding the synagogue consists of a timber frame construction for the external west and south walls with new roofs following the existing pitches and repair works to the existing trusses. A new steel frame was erected internally to create the new floor and wall spaces.

Brighton College Tour

Brighton College , Eastern Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN2 0AL

The College is situated in the Kemp Town district to the east of Brighton. The early parts were designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, RA, 1848 to 1862. Additions were made by Sir Thomas Jackson, RA, an Old Brightonian in 1885.

The Performing Arts Centre, incorporating Scott’s Café, music rooms and the Dance Studio, was opened in the summer of 2000. A new Visual Arts Centre was created in 2008, and the new Skidelsky building was completed in 2010. A new social space, the Smith Building, opened in January 2012, followed by a new girls’ boarding house in autumn 2013. The original vision of Sir Thomas Jackson for the main quad was completed in 2014 via the construction of the entrance tower. The Friends Meeting House, Ship Street, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 1AF

A lavishly illustrated talk by David Fisher with exhibition of Hippodrome memorabilia between 13:45 and 17:00 while talk not in progress.

Many people have asked if they can look inside the Hippodrome. Unfortunately that is not possible but this is the next best thing. The talk will show, in over 200 images, the history of this endangered Grade II* listed gem—the finest unused theatre in the country. Its days as a skating rink, circus, variety theatre and bingo hall will be lavishly illustrated.

The potential and plans for its future will also be explained by David Fisher, who has been involved throughout the campaign to save and restore the theatre and has done extensive research into its history. The talk will include pictures and information not previously know or revealed.

The interior by Frank Matcham is the real reason for the Hippodrome’s unique importance as the finest unused theatre in the country. However, with the aid of photographs and plans, this ‘tour’ from the outside will explain why it is so important that such a derelict building should be brought back to life and how this could be done.

Brighton Unitarian Church

Unitarian Church, New Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 1UF

The church was built in 1820 on land purchased from the Prince Regent.

The congregation dates from 1793. The church building was completed in August 1820. Dr Morell, a well-known classical scholar, was appointed as the first minister of the church. Due in large part to his influence, the design of the church was inspired by the ancient Temple of Theseus in Athens. It was designed by well-known local architect Amon Henry Wilds – who built much of Brighton’s fashionable Kemp Town.

Attractive stained glass windows are an interesting feature of a simple recently renovated and decorated interior. Come and see our Grade II listed Regency building. One of the first classical places of worship in the city.

Building the Denman Legacy

The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Hove, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

The Denman family, humble Sussex builders in the early-to-mid-19th century, rose to become amongst the most influential of local architectural clans during the 20th century. Today, almost all of us will fairly regularly negotiate our way through (and past) a wide variety of properties they have shaped. This small exhibition exposes and celebrates their contribution to the local townscape and will, hopefully, encourage a larger and more comprehensive presentation in the future.

Embassy Court, Icon of 20th Century Modernism

King's Road, Corner of Western Street, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 2PX

Embassy Court was designed by the Canadian architect Wells Coates and completed in 1936. The following year, the Museum of Modern Art in New York featured the building in its seminal exhibition 'Modern Architecture in England', arguing that the UK was at the forefront of Modernism and Embassy Court the epitome of everything desirable in modern architecture.

However such innovative design in the relatively inhospitable winter presented challenges and the building fell into serious disrepair over an extended period. Extensive renovations in 2005 saw a re-emergence of this glorious landmark. It is now benefiting from regular maintenance and a vibrant resident community.

A 90 minute tour of this iconic 1930s Modernist apartment block on Brighton seafront. It was the first purpose built apartment block in the UK to have top floor flats designated as 'penthouse' designed by renowned Canadian architect Wells Coates. The tour takes in the stunning views from the 11th floor sun terrace, the interior of a flat and the area behind the scenes from which the building is run by residents and leaseholders.

Foredown Tower Camera Obscura Demonstration

Foredown Tower, Foredown Road, Portslade, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN41 2EW

A hidden gem nestled on the edge of the South Downs, Foredown Tower fascinates adults and children alike. This iconic Edwardian water tower stands solid and proud in the skyline of Portslade Old Village. Set inside tall flint walls, the garden is notorious for its “Foredown wind”.

Older Brightonians may remember with dread the Isolation Hospital which the Tower was built to serve. Never fear, the hospital was demolished and a pleasant housing complex has replaced it.

Foredown Tower now features a “camera obscura” since 1991 – the largest in the South-East. A lens at the summit of the converted Tower projects views of the surroundings onto a convex dish. Our knowledgeable expert demonstrators will tell you about the history of points of interest while sweeping 360° around the local area. And watch out for flying gulls and cars zipping along the by-pass!

Stay for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee with cakes and snacks in our very reasonably-priced cafe. Free parking.

Middle Street Synagogue - Brighton

Synagogue, Middle Street, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 1AL

In 1874, a project for a new synagogue in Brighton was put out to tender. It was won by Thomas Lainson, a well-known local architect and the new synagogue opened in 1875. The exterior has been described as both Byzantine and Romanesque and looks slightly out of place in its side street home. The interior was described by Anthony Dale as amongst the most splendid synagogue interiors in Europe. It certainly is quite spectacular but was originally fairly plain. Between 1880-1915, donations gradually furnished the building with wrought iron, brass work and stained glass. The building has recently been nominated for the European Routes of Jewish Heritage as one of Britain's Top Ten Synagogues.

Join site director John Skelton for a tour of the church and site of the excavation of a medieval enclosure associated with the late Saxon and early Norman church.

The field immediately north of St Wulfran’s Church, Ovingdean is full of earthworks forming an enclosure. Geophysical studies and excavations from 2003 have revealed a large flint constructed medieval house, and numerous walls indicating the presence of other buildings possibly workshops, storerooms and smaller dwellings. In 2014 excavations beneath the large earthwork produced pottery dating from the Saxon period, and post holes that may be Saxon buildings. Finds have included pottery, bone, marine shells and metal objects which include a spur and armour piercing arrow heads. The excavations for this season commenced in April this year and will continue until October. The field is accessed by a stile near the church gate.

Pubs, banks and pylons - the architectural legacy of John Leopold Denman

Meet at entrance to Brighton Museum, Brighton Museum, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 1EE

Recognise this ? Yes , it’s one of the two pylons erected in 1928 on the A23 at the borough boundaries to welcome visitors to Brighton . These monuments are familiar to anyone who has ever driven on the London -Brighton road , but who was the architect ? Well , he was John Leopold Denman (1882-1975). If you would like to find out more about this extraordinarily prolific man and the contribution he made to the appearance of our city, join Gilly , Ian and Sandra for a walking tour of some of his buildings.

John Leopold Denman deserves to be better known. Not only has he left us a wonderful legacy , but all of us interested in architecture and townscape owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for his efforts to save the regency heritage of Brighton at a time after 1945 when it was under threat of demolition.

The range of his work is impressive: this is a man who was architect for the Kemp Town Brewery at the same time as being employed by the diocese of Chichester. In addition to pubs and sensitively restored churches , there are houses , flats , banks , commercial buildings and the wonderfully exotic mosaic facade of the Freemasons pub in Western Road.

Come and join us and discover more about a great Brightonian.

St Andrew’s Old Church, Hove

Church Road, Hove, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 2AD

St Andrew’s Old Church in Church Road, Hove, served as Hove’s parish church for many centuries. However by the early 19th century the structure was in a state of near ruin.
It was rebuilt in 1836 as nearly as possible to its original design and the interior of the church between the pillars is contemporary with the original foundations.
There are many interesting memorial tablets in the church and in the graveyard are the tombs of several famous persons, including Sir George Everest.

St Bartholomew’s Church

Ann Street, Brighton , Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 4GP

St Bartholomew, Brighton, one of the great churches of the 19th century - the cathedral of what used to be called the 'London-Brighton and South Coast Religion' with its incense, ritual, embroidered vestments and lights. The fabric itself is is a masterpiece of brickwork and a credit to its little-known architect, Edmund Scott. The fittings, great baldacchino and silver side altar by Henry Wilson, the font and the stained glass lancets complement each other and enhance the building. Only Holy Trinity, Sloane Street, in London, compares with it as a monument in richness of fittings belonging to that inventive time of the Art Workers Guild which immediately succeeded William Morris. In the noise and glitter of cheerful Brighton, this great church is a tall sanctuary of peace. Its interior awes beholders to silence.

St George’s Church, Kemp Town

St George's Road, Kemp Town, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN2 1ED

St George's Church was designed in 1824-5 by the architect C. A. Busby for Thomas Read Kemp M.P. The church was intended to serve the new estate at Kemp Town, and was consecrated on 30 December 1825. Displaying Busby's considerable competence in Neo-Classical design, the church is rectangular, without transepts, and has a particularly lovely west front displaying a Grecian bell-tower and a pair of Doric pilasters either side of the main entrance. The church is Grade II listed and can seat 1,300 people, a capacity which is still fully used for concerts and other events. St George's remains a vibrant part of the local community today, with a busy Community Centre in the crypt and, upstairs, a popular café.

St Helen’s Church Open Days

St Helen’s Church, Hangleton Way/Downsview, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 8ER

Listed Grade II, St Helen's has parts variously dated to Late Saxon to Early Norman. It does not feature in Domesday, but certainly was in existence by 1093. The Tower was added c.1300 along with a re-modelling of the Chancel. The decline of the village after the black death in the mid 14th century to a population of less than 100 which level remained until the 20th century was probably responsible for saving St Helen's from the Victorian 'restorers'. Today much of the medieval fabric remains, the inside having more changes to make a living building more suitable for today's worship, while retaining a few original features. Much repair and restoration has been done in recent years, the 1960s north vestry has flint walls to match the original construction materials. After water damage in the 1950s, several layers of medieval wall paintings were uncovered and stabilized.

St Leonard’s Church, Aldrington

St Leonard's Church, 211 New Church Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 4DB

St Leonard's Church is the original parish church of Aldrington, Hove

In the 1700s a storm destroyed almost all of the church of St Leonard's. It was not until 1877/78 that the ruin was replaced by a small building with a chancel, nave, vestry and bell tower, designed by Carpenter & Ingelow. Some of the knapped flints from the earlier building survive in the lowest level of the current tower. In the 1930s a larger chancel, nave, baptistry and vestries were added on the north and east sides, designed by Harold Milburn Pett, the Diocesan Architect, in the ‘medieval’ style of the older church. The bell tower, to which a spire was added at this time, has 6 bells which are still in active use today. The chancel is light and airy and there are some excellent stained glass windows designed by Clayton & Bell. The graveyard, which contains some interesting memorials, is one of only three public access open spaces in the parish and recently there has been an experimental attempt in its management, to encourage wildlife. The north-east corner, which was never consecrated, has been managed as an organic community allotment since 2013, by the ‘Secret Garden’ group.

We will have an exhibition telling ‘Our Stories’ – the story of St Leonard’s Church and many of the people who have had some connection with it. There will be an opportunity to learn how the church bells work and to try out handbell ringing. Children will be able to draw their own design for a stained glass window. We will also be providing simple refreshments, with proceeds going to charity.

St Mary’s Kemp Town - Visit the Church and Explore our Stories in Stone and Glass (plus Free Recital)

Upper Rock Gardens, Brighton, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN2 1PR

St Mary’s Church was built in 1876–8 to designs by Sir William Emerson, PRIBA, and is his only surviving church in Britain. The modest brick exterior conceals an interior of surprising volume and warmth, which reflects Emerson’s training under William Burges, the great Gothic Revivalist, but also the Indo-Islamic influences of a career spent largely in India, where he most famously built the Victoria Memorial in Calcutta (Kolkata). The interior is finely finished; the pier capitals, brick vaulting, pulpit, font, reredos and canopy, mosaic sanctuary floor, and choir stalls are all deserving of attention. There is an excellent range of stained-glass and cathedral-tint windows, including eight pictorial windows by Alfred Octavius Hemming. Other windows are by George William Luxford, James Powell & Sons, Burlison and Grylls, Mayer of Munich, and Charles Eamer Kempe.

Come and explore our church and learn how to read the stories carved in our stones and painted on our beautiful windows. There will be binoculars and big photos on hand to reveal the details you don’t normally see from the ground as well as special worksheets for children. We’ll also have details of our exciting new round of repairs to the front overlooking St James’s Street, which will be happening in 2018.

St Nicholas’ Church, Brighton

Dyke Road, Brighton, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 3LJ

This church is dedicated to St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. Until 1873, St Nicholas was the Parish Church of Brighton and it still is the Mother Church and the only church in central Brighton of ancient interest. The earliest known reference to a church in Brighthelmstone, the old name for Brighton, comes from William the Conqueror's great census, the Domesday Book, written about 1085. This states that there was a church, valued at £12, which had been assessed as worth £10 in the reign of the Saxon King Edward. On the wall of the south aisle is a list of vicars, far from complete and not always accurate, but dating back to 1091. The side chapel, now the Lady Chapel, dates from the early years of the 16th Century and may originally have been a chantry chapel. In 2009 the wall paintings adorning the Chancel and West walls and the 14th century screen were restored.

St Nicholas’ Church, Portslade

South Street, Portslade, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN41 2LE

St Nicolas Portslade was built around 1170 - but since then almost every generation have done things to the building to better suit the needs of the worshipping community - including adding a “weeping” chancel and bell tower around 1250; a north aisle and pews in the 1850s; a choir gallery in 1932. The Brackenbury Chapel is a fine example of a Victorian Mortuary Chapel. Possibly the most famous parishioner was Harry Blaker (whose memorial tablet is in the south aisle). As Surgeon to the Royal Family when they were at the Royal Pavilion he vaccinated Queen Victoria’s eldest children the Princess Royal (later Empress of Germany) and the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). St Nicolas has been in continuous use for 844 years, probably aided by its close proximity to Portslade’s Norman Manor House.

St Paul’s Church - Open Door

West Street, Brighton , Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 2RE

St Paul’s is one of the most impressive churches in Brighton and its construction in 1846-48 signified the final victory of the gothic style. The church was originally intended to serve the poorer population of the western part of the old town. However, for some years after it was built, it was crowded with fashionable folk as well as fishermen. It was the first church in Brighton to promote the Tractarian movement, which called for the revival of Catholicism in the Church of England.

The building has the largest collection of Pugin stained glass in the Church of England. Join us for a guided tour of the building to see this magnificent legacy as well as windows by Kempe.

St Paul's is also home to Safe Space, a rescue point operated on Friday and Saturday by the YMCA and Red Cross, to help those in need on those evenings. Street Pastors are also based at St Paul's.

TAKE SHELTER! @ Downs Junior School

Downs Junior School, Rugby Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 6ED

New for HODs 2017!

Hidden away under the playground at Downs Junior School is an amazing original WW2 Air Raid Shelter. Constructed in 1939, the Shelter is the largest of three at the school, and is the only one still accessible.

The Trenches, as they were known at the time, are a series of interconnecting tunnels made from pre-cast concrete panels approximately 3 metres below the playground. With bench seating along each corridor the Shelter had a capacity for 300 pupils, and was also used by the local community at night. After the two main staircase entrances were removed and sealed after the war, the Shelter remained undiscovered for over 30 years until it was discovered in 1985 during a routine drain inspection. Initial refurbishment was carried out in 2012 to open up the shelter to visitors, and then after major restoration work in 2016 the Shelter was opened as a Museum, and Take Shelter was born.

We are offering 140 visitors a free 45 minute guided tour (in groups of 10). Tours times will be every 15 minutes from 12:00 to 15:15 and must be booked in advance.

The Fascinating Mr Ranger and Early British Concrete Heritage

The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

William Ranger was born in Ringmer, Sussex, at the end of the 18th century but spent many of his formative years in Brighton; where he worked with a young Charles Barry, then just embarking on his long architectural career. During this period, Ranger and Barry developed key local sites such as St Peter's Church and the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Working sometimes jointly with Barry and at other times alone, Ranger also undertook many other local projects including repairs to the property of Mrs Dulany, the extension of the Royal Pavilion, the building of Admiral Codrington's home, the creation of sunken gardens for Kemptown residents and the formation of the Brighton Sea Walls. In almost all of these sites he deployed 'Ranger's Artificial Stone', a product for which he subsequently acquired patents in 1832 and 1834. Join us for a 60 minute introduction to the fascinating, but hitherto little known, Mr Ranger and his intriguing Artificial Stone.

The Level - The People’s Park?

As these areas developed in the mid-19th century, triggered by the advent of the railway, The Level found itself at the centre of changing social communities. This has continued into the present day.

The Feibusch Nativity Mural At St Wilfrid’s

St. Wilfrids Flats, Whippingham Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN2 3PZ

The stunning mural painted by Hans Feibusch in 1939 has been unseen for thirty seven years. This is a unique opportunity to view.

The mural adorns three walls in what was the Lady Chapel of the former Anglican church of St Wilfrid’s which is now sheltered housing. The building is Grade II listed and replaced the original temporary tin church of 1901. The architect of the current building was Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel who designed it in Eclectic style. John Betjeman called it "about the best 1930s church there is".

Hans Feibusch (1898-1998) was a German Jewish artist and sculptor. He painted several church murals in Britain in appreciation of the warm reception he received in this country after he fled Nazi Germany where his paintings were destroyed. He worked as a muralist and sculptor in thirty English Anglican churches including Ely Cathedral.

Guide Sarah Tobias is lecturer in social, cultural and local history.

or complement it? When the heritage building is Saltdean
Lido, how can you avoid pastiche?

Come and visit One Saltdean Drive, four residences with
spectacular views recently completed by Kim Strasman

What the lady’s maid saw

The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

For the sort of women who employed servants to get them dressed every day, it wasn’t the butler but their ladies’ maids who saw them naked. So did this intimacy often – or ever – lead to sexual desire, or even love? And if it did, who was desiring whom?
This talk will look at some women in the 19th and early 20th centuries whose cross-class relationships might today be called lesbian. What sort of intimacy was possible for them in a world where relationships between domestic servants and their employers really wasn’t like that of Downton Abbey?
We use some reported fact, some original research, and a whole lot of speculation, to consider a few of these relationships.

Adults only.

Whitehawk Camp - Neolithic Causewayed Enclosure or Stone Age Circle?

Meet: Corner of Manor Hill and Queensway, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex

Fed up with Regency architecture? Come along and explore the first visible enclosing of a large communal space in our region. Situated in a commanding position above East Brighton, close to the Race Course, lays one of Britain's earliest Stone Age monuments. The hill top here was chosen some 5,650 years ago as the site for a large ceremonial enclosure, an area for undertaking feasting, burials and communing. Dating to c. 3,650 B.C. the monument represents one of the earliest ritual circles in northern Europe and predates later Neolithic enclosures like Stonehenge and Avebury by around 500 years. A c. 60 minute guided tour of this unique part of Brighton & Hove's heritage will be given by Jon Sygrave from UCL's Institute of Archaeology. The tour will provide an introduction to the early British Neolithic in Sussex and the layout and significance of the Whitehawk enclosure.

Shoreham Lifeboat Station Tour

Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Lifeboat House, Brighton Road, Brighton & Hove, West Sussex, BN43 6RN

Shoreham RNLI Lifeboat Station celebrates over 150 years of saving lives at sea.

The present Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat station was completed in 2010 following the demolition of the old Lifeboat Station which had stood on the same site since 1933. The new Lifeboat Station consists of a large boat hall, crew training room / class room, proper drying facilities for wet crew kit, changing facilities and a viewing platform, all of which will be open to the public during the Brighton Heritage Open days (subject to emergency operational requirements).

The Lifeboat Station on Kingston Beach, houses our state of the art Tamar all weather lifeboat. At almost £3m the Tamar class is a huge investment for the RNLI but brings huge advantages to our lifesaving work.

Whilst visiting Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat Station you will be shown around by one of the station’s knowledgeable volunteer visit guides who will not only show you both of Shoreham Harbours Lifeboats (sorry no access on boats) but will also show you where the lifeboat crews’ kit is kept. Great Grandmother and the Brighton Workhouse

13 Brunswick Square, Hove, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

It is said that the Brighton Workhouse, now Brighton General Hospital, that sits at the top of Elm Grove, was purpose built in order to loom over the city as a forever present threat to the poor.

The film is an exploration of the filmmaker's family’s long history of living in Brighton, with a focus on her Great Grandmother Alice’s time spent in the Brighton Workhouse in the 1930’s, which subsequently led to her being admitted as a patient at Haywards Heath asylum (now St Francis Hospital) where she stayed for over 20 years.  The short film is centred around the memories of the filmmaker's mother Rebecca and Grandmother Eve.  It tries to piece together the story of Alice’s life, whilst also reflecting upon the harsh history of institutions like the Brighton Workhouse.

The filmmaker was brought up in Brighton and, with her family having a longstanding history of living in the city, she was drawn to the idea of making a film exploring her family’s history.  When she found out that her Great Grandmother, Alice, had been an inmate in the Brighton Workhouse she knew that there was a story to tell

Preston Park History Tour

Florianas Rotunda Cafe, Preston Park, Preston Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 6HN

Ever wondered about the history of Preston Park - the biggest and first municipal park in the city? This Illustrated History of Preston Park Walk will take you on a journey from Roman times to the present day.

What was the ancient significance of this plot? Who owned the land, and when and why did they sell it? Who provided the money to buy the land to be a park? You will get to know the strange and varied buildings in the park, two of which are listed, one of which was bought from a distant agricultural show and moved, piecemeal, to the park.

You’ll meet - in pictorial form - the eccentric man who fashioned much of the park’s display as it’s seen today - an early recycler of materials. And there are interesting stories about the park’s use in both the First and Second World Wars. Researched from a number of sources and accompanied by around 20 amazing images which will be distributed as you walk around, this is a walk you’ll remember.
