Georgian and Victorian Brighton in Poetry

Address
The Cornerstone Community Centre, Church Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 2FL

Description
Poetry for Pleasure, a group formed in 1999, presents a programme of poetry inspired by 18th and 19th centuries Brighton, since it changed from a coastal fishing village to become a major seaside resort. Prominent among the themes selected are its architecture, elegant, sometimes brash, with the Pavilion as a centrepiece. The coming of the railway and its social and industrial impact are also featured. The growth of sea bathing and beach culture encouraged writers to explore how these developments accelerated the town’s expansion and its relations with its neighbours in Sussex . The grandeur and drama of Brighton belong perhaps more to the works of Turner and Graham Greene but poets have touched on aspects of the town which escaped the attention of artists and novelists. Poetry for Pleasure offers here an engaging potpourri of themes and reflections on what has since become 'our city'.
