Immediately behind 13 Brunswick Square and still directly connected to it, (see graphic below), lies a remarkable architectural gem, a true relic of early 19th century life, our original stable and coach house. Standing as a living testament to the rhythms and practices of a bygone era, this site is extremely rare, with even its lime-washed hay loft and areas of original flooring still intact.

During the early 20th C, such parts of large, terraced houses were generally sold off and, when listing was introduced in 1947, they were left unprotected. Consequently, many have undergone significant change, or outright demolition. Today, surviving original features are extremely unusual.

Unexpectedly, we now have the chance to secure this exceptionally well-preserved part of the Town House, as the current owners, who have been considering modernisation, are keen that we might secure the site for heritage use.

If we can make the purchase, we will be the only terraced historic home in the country to offer visitors authentic grand interiors, servant’s working rooms and equestrian quarters.

UPDATE, as of 24 June 2026:

Our charity, the Brunswick Town Charitable Trust (Registered Charity No. 1012216), is making strong progress towards reuniting the original elements of our historic property. We currently hold a sales contract with the vendors and have recently achieved our public fundraising target of £100,000, contributing towards the total £500,000 required for acquisition and repair.

In addition, we have secured financial support from the Architectural Heritage Fund. The final stage of our strategy to reacquire the former stabling is to obtain support from the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Subject to this funding being awarded, we anticipate securing the site in August.

UPDATE, as of 28 August 2026:

When offered the opportunity to reacquire our original attached stable we were keen to embrace the opportunity.

Further to a strategic session with officers from the National Heritage Lottery Fund, last November we launched an initiative to secure the property, this requiring that our trust secure:

• A £250,000 Lottery grant to fund repairs, interpretation, and a portion of the £400,000 purchase fee.

 • £100,000 in community funding to evidence local support for the purchase.

 • A mortgage for £125,000 to evidence the trust’s own long-term commitment.

After successfully raising the required community input and obtaining a formal mortgage offer from the Architectural Heritage Fund, we were confident of Lottery Fund support. Unfortunately, we heard last week that they were not in a position to suport us at this time - a deeply disappointing setback.

This calls for a change of plan.

With AHF and community support, our trust has immediate access to £350,000 of the £430,000 needed to secure and repair No. 36, and must now choose between the following practical options:

1. Secure without delay a further £80,000 to finance the purchase and repair of the stabling.

2. Sell our Basement Annex at No.10 Brunswick Square to complete the above.

Selling the trust’s Basement Annex is clearly an option, but we really want to save two unparalleled pieces of architectural history, or Stables and Basement. In this moment of crisis, we are seeking a visionary funding partner, or a select circle of benefactors to help bridge the capital gap we face.
