All Saints stands as one of the finest churches of the 19th century Gothic Revival and the creation of two remarkable men: Thomas Peacey, the first Vicar of modern-day Hove, and John Loughborough Pearson, one of the principal architects of the period. It is listed Grade I and is the largest and most costly of Pearson's great town churches, exceeded in size only by his two cathedrals of Truro and Brisbane. It has one of the richest arrays of Christian iconography of the period and its furnishings of carved stone and woodwork, together with the great scheme of stained glass created by the pre-eminent firm of Clayton and Bell are of an extraordinary high quality. It has always been highly regarded as a building: Nikolaus Pevsner described it as 'superb and cathedral-like'.

Brighton Unitarian Church

Unitarian Church, New Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 1UF

The church was built in 1820 on land purchased from the Prince Regent.

The congregation dates from 1793. The church building was completed in August 1820. Dr Morell, a well-known classical scholar, was appointed as the first minister of the church. Due in large part to his influence, the design of the church was inspired by the ancient Temple of Theseus in Athens. It was designed by well-known local architect Amon Henry Wilds – who built much of Brighton’s fashionable Kemp Town.

Attractive stained glass windows are an interesting feature of a simple recently renovated and decorated interior. Come and see our Grade II listed Regency building. One of the first classical places of worship in the city.

Today, almost all of us will fairly regularly negotiate our way through (and past) a wide variety of properties they have shaped. This small exhibition exposes and celebrates their contribution to the local townscape and will, hopefully, encourage a larger and more comprehensive presentation in the future. Each participant will receive a free copy of the trail route, upon arrival at the start point. NOTE: This route takes you from Old Steine to Cavendish Place, via some of the oldest streets in Brighton, showing you a wide variety of plaques on the way. Allow an hour or so for the plaques walk, and perhaps some time for the shops and restaurants at the end!

Embassy Court,  Icon of 20th Century Modernism

King's Road, Corner of Western Street, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 2PX

Embassy Court was designed by the Canadian architect Wells Coates and completed in 1936. The following year, the Museum of Modern Art in New York featured the building in its seminal exhibition 'Modern Architecture in England', arguing that the UK was at the forefront of Modernism and Embassy Court the epitome of everything desirable in modern architecture.

However such innovative design in the relatively inhospitable winter presented challenges and the building fell into serious disrepair over an extended period. Extensive renovations in 2005 saw a re-emergence of this glorious landmark. It is now benefiting from regular maintenance and a vibrant resident community.

A 90 minute tour of this iconic 1930's Modernist apartment block on Brighton seafront. It was the first purpose built apartment block in the UK to have top floor flats designated as 'penthouse' designed by renowned Canadian architect Wells Coates. The tour takes in the stunning views from the 11th floor sun terrace, the interior of a flat and the area behind the scenes from which the building is run by residents and leaseholders.

Foredown Tower Camera Obscura Demonstration

Foredown Tower Countryside Centre, Foredown Road, Portslade, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN41 2EW

A hidden gem nestled on the edge of the South Downs, Foredown Tower fascinates adults and children alike. This iconic Edwardian water tower stands solid and proud in the skyline of Portslade Old Village. Set inside tall flint walls, the garden is notorious for its “Foredown wind”.

Older Brightonians may remember with dread the Isolation Hospital which the Tower was built to serve. Never fear, the hospital was demolished and a pleasant housing complex has replaced it.

Foredown Tower now features a “camera obscura” since 1991 – the largest in the South-East. A lens at the summit of the converted Tower projects views of the surroundings onto a convex dish. Our knowledgeable expert demonstrators will tell you about the history of points of interest while sweeping 360° around the local area. And watch out for flying gulls and cars zipping along the by-pass!

Stay for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee with cakes and snacks in our very reasonably-priced cafe. Free parking.

Keep the Home Fires Burning

Join us for this special drop-in event, to explore and contribute to our local heritage project, The Boys on the Plaque! Find out about remarkable young men who lived in our city and fought in the war 100 years ago, and the discoveries we've made about their experiences, families and legacies.

Keep the Home Fires Burning brings together local research, creative workshops and exhibitions, heritage activities and screenings to explore personal memories of Brighton & Hove residents during WWI wartime and the stories that have been left behind for us to rediscover.

Fabrica is a contemporary art gallery housed in the former Holy Trinity Church in Brighton, which was built in 1817 and has a rich and fascinating history. To celebrate Heritage Open Days, Fabrica will open it’s doors to the public for an afternoon of stimulating and engaging activities and exhibits to discover more about our local community, inspiring new ways of considering the home front experience of the Great War.

Visitors are also invited to bring their own stories and keepsakes to share with volunteers and staff and contribute to our research project, which seeks to uncover the history of each of 95 local soldiers who are commemorated in the church. Could you be a relative of one of the Boys? They mostly lived in the streets surrounding the church - you can find a list of the names here:boysontheplaque.wordpress.com/the-names-on-the-plaque/

Middle Street Synagogue - Brighton

Synagogue, Middle Street, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 1AL

In 1874, a project for a new synagogue in Brighton was put out to tender. It was won by Thomas Lainson, a well-known local architect and the new synagogue opened in 1875. The exterior has been described as both Byzantine and Romanesque and looks slightly out of place in its side street home. The interior was described by Anthony Dale as amongst the most splendid synagogue interiors in Europe. It certainly is quite spectacular but was originally fairly plain, but between 1880-1915, donations gradually furnished the building with wrought iron, brass work and stained glass. The building has recently been nominated for the European Routes of Jewish Heritage as one of Britain's Top Ten Synagogues.

In this, the 250th year of Brighton Jewry, we will host an open house event from 12 noon until 4pm on the Sunday. People will be on hand to answer questions and the special 250th Anthology will be available for purchase.

Ovingdean excavation site

Meet at entrance to Ovingdean Church (St Wulfran's), Greenways, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN2 7BA

Join site director John Skelton for a tour of the church and site of the excavation of a medieval enclosure associated with the late Saxon and early Norman church.

The field immediately north of St Wulfran’s Church, Ovingdean is full of earthworks forming an enclosure. Geophysical studies and excavations from 2003 have revealed a large flint constructed medieval house, and numerous walls indicating the presence of other buildings possibly workshops, storerooms and smaller dwellings. In 2014 excavations beneath the large earthwork produced pottery dating from the Saxon period, and post holes that may be Saxon buildings. Finds have included pottery, bone, marine shells and metal objects which include a spur and armour piercing arrow heads. The excavations for this season commenced in April this year and will continue until October. The field is accessed by a stile near the church gate.

Preston Park - History Tour

Florianas Rotunda Cafe, Preston Park, Preston Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 6HN

Ever wondered about the history of Preston Park - the biggest and first municipal park in the city? This Illustrated History of Preston Park Walk will take you on a journey from Roman times to the present day.

What was the ancient significance of this plot? Who owned the land, and when and why did they sell it? Who provided the money to buy the land to be a park? You will get to know the strange and varied buildings in the park, two of which are listed, one of which was bought from a distant agricultural show and moved, piecemeal, to the park.

You’ll meet - in pictorial form - the eccentric man who fashioned much of the park’s display as it’s seen today - an early recycler of materials. And there are interesting stories about the park’s use in both the First and Second World Wars. Researched from a number of sources and accompanied by around 20 amazing images which will be distributed as you walk around, this is a walk you’ll remember.

Shoreham RNLI Lifeboat Station celebrates over 150 years of saving lives at sea.

The present Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat station was completed in 2010 following the demolition of the old Lifeboat Station which had stood on the same site since 1933. St Andrew’s Old Church in Church Road, Hove, served as Hove’s parish church for many centuries. However by the early 19th century the structure was in a state of near ruin.
It was rebuilt in 1836 as nearly as possible to its original design and the interior of the church between the pillars is contemporary with the original foundations.

St Bartholomew’s Church

Ann Street, Brighton , Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 4GP

St Bartholomew, Brighton, one of the great churches of the 19th century - the cathedral of what used to be called the 'London-Brighton and South Coast Religion' with its incense, ritual, embroidered vestments and lights. The fabric itself is is a masterpiece of brickwork and a credit to its little-known architect, Edmund Scott. The fittings, great baldacchino and silver side altar by Henry Wilson, the font and the stained glass lancets complement each other and enhance the building. Only Holy Trinity, Sloane Street, in London, compares with it as a monument in richness of fittings belonging to that inventive time of the Art Workers Guild which immediately succeeded William Morris. In the noise and glitter of cheerful Brighton, this great church is a tall sanctuary of peace. Its interior awes beholders to silence.

St Helen’s Open Days and “Bounty of Nature” Exhibits

St Helen’s Church, Hangleton Way/Downsview, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 8ER

Listed Grade II, St Helen's has parts variously dated to Late Saxon to Early Norman, It does not feature in Domesday, but certainly was in existence by 1093. The Tower was added c. 1300 along with a re-modelling of the Chancel. The decline of the village after the black death in the mid 14th century to a population of less than 100 which level remained until the 20th century was probably responsible for saving St Helen's from the Victorian 'restorers'. Today much of the medieval fabric remains, the inside having more changes to make a living building more suitable for today's worship, while retaining a few original features. Much repair and restoration has been done in recent years, the 1960s north vestry has flint walls to match the original construction materials. After water damage in the 1950s, several layers of medieval wall paintings were uncovered and stabilized.

St Leonard’s Church, Aldrington

St Leonard's Church, 211 New Church Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 4DB

St Leonard's Church is one of the two churches in the Parish of Aldrington, the other being St Philip’s about a mile to the east on New Church Road which you can visit while you're in the area.

There was an earlier small church on this site which was demolished by a storm in the 1700s. Some of the stone from this building survives in the lowest level of the current tower. In 1877 the ruin was replaced by a small building with a chancel, nave, a vestry and a tower containing five bells. In 1930 a new chancel, nave, baptistry and vestries were added on the north and east sides, designed by J Milburn Pett in the ‘medieval’ style of the older church. The bell tower now has 6 bells which are in active use today. The chancel is light and airy and there is some good stained glass. The tranquil graveyard is one of only three public access open spaces in the parish and is now managed to encourage wildlife. It is full of birdsong and the sounds of insects throughout the year. The north-east corner which was never consecrated is now (since 2013) an organic community allotment managed by the Secret Garden Group.

We will operate an 'open door', but there will be people around to answer questions and guide people to toilets etc.. Both churches will offer refreshments and home made cakes.

St Mary’s Kemp Town - Visit the church and meet a stone mason

Upper Rock Gardens, Brighton, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN2 1PR

St Mary’s Church was built in 1876–8 to designs by Sir William Emerson, PRIBA, and is his only surviving church in Britain. The modest brick exterior conceals an interior of surprising volume and warmth, which reflects Emerson’s training under William Burges, the great Gothic Revivalist, but also the Indo-Islamic influences of a career spent largely in India, where he most famously built the Victoria Memorial in Calcutta (Kolkata). The interior is finely finished; the pier capitals, brick vaulting, pulpit, font, reredos and canopy, mosaic sanctuary floor, and choir stalls are all deserving of attention. There is an excellent range of stained-glass and cathedral-tint windows, including eight pictorial windows by Alfred Octavius Hemming. Other windows are by George William Luxford, James Powell & Sons, Burlison and Grylls, Mayer of Munich, and Charles Eamer Kempe.

Come and meet a banker mason from Pierra Restoration who is helping to repair decayed stonework at St Mary’s Church. A banker mason specialises in cutting and shaping stone to precise requirements. You will be able to watch the mason at work and ask about the tools and skills involved in the trade. One of our conservation architects will also be on hand to answer questions.

St Nicholas’ Church, Brighton

Dyke Road, Brighton, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 3LJ

This church is dedicated to St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. Until 1873, St Nicholas was the Parish Church of Brighton and it still is the Mother Church and the only church in central Brighton of ancient interest. The earliest known reference to a church in Brighthelmstone, the old name for Brighton, comes from William the Conqueror's great census, the Domesday Book, written about 1085. This states that there was a church, valued at £12, which had been assessed as worth £10 in the reign of the Saxon King Edward. On the wall of the south aisle is a list of vicars, far from complete and not always accurate, but dating back to 1091. The side chapel, now the Lady Chapel, dates from the early years of the 16th Century and may originally have been a chantry chapel. In 2009 the wall paintings adorning the Chancel and West walls and the 14th century screen were restored.

St Nicholas’ Church, Portslade

South Street, Portslade, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN41 2LE

St Nicolas Portslade was built around 1170 - but since then almost every generation have done things to the building to better suit the needs of the worshipping community - including adding a “weeping” chancel and bell tower around 1250; a north aisle and pews in the 1850s; a choir gallery in 1932. The Brackenbury Chapel is a fine example of a Victorian Mortuary Chapel. Possibly the most famous parishioner was Harry Blaker (whose memorial tablet is in the south aisle). As Surgeon to the Royal Family when they were at the Royal Pavilion he vaccinated Queen Victoria’s eldest children the Princess Royal (later Empress of Germany) and the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). St Nicolas has been in continuous use for 844 years, probably aided by its close proximity to Portslade’s Norman Manor House.

St Paul’s Church - Open Door

West Street, Brighton , Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 2RE

St Paul’s is one of the most impressive churches in Brighton and its
construction in 1846-48 signified the final victory of the gothic style.
The church was originally intended to serve the poorer population of
the western part of the old town. However, for some years after it was
built, it was crowded with fashionable folk as well as fishermen. It was
the first church in Brighton to promote the Tractarian movement,
which called for the revival of Catholicism in the Church of England.

The building has the largest collection of Pugin stained glass in the Church
of England.

St Paul's is also home to Safe Space, a rescue point operated on Friday
and Saturday by the YMCA and Red Cross, to help those in

St Philip’s Church, West Hove

St. Philips Church, New Church Road, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 4BB

St Philip's Church is situated in New Church Road, Hove, It is one of two churches in the Parish of Aldrington, the other being St Leonard's, about a mile to the west on New Church Road which you can visit while in the area.

St Philip's is a red brick, flint and portland stone Arts and Crafts style church, dating rom 1894. The building is typical of the architect J.Oldrid Scott who aimed at a polychromatic effect by the use of chequers of stone, flint and brick.Bricklayers love the building! There is some typically ‘Arts and Crafts’ carved woodwork in the chancel and some good stained glass throughout the building.

At the west end of the church is a mural by Augustus Lunn, entitled The Sussex Benedicite. It depicts he Sussex countryside with notable landmarksand commemorates "friends and comrades who fell in battle in the cause of freedom" in the Second World War. When originally painted in 1957 it was the largest mural in any Church in Sussex. Mr. Lunn, a pupil of Hans Fiebusch, was also responsible for some of the mural paintings at The Festival of Britain. .
Since 2010 St Philip's has been part of the Parish of Aldrington which replaced the Group Benefice set up in 1989.

We will operate an 'open door', but there will be people around to answer questions and guide people to toilets etc. At St Philip's there will be a Church Mouse Trail for youngsters with prizes for completed trails. Both churches will offer refreshments and home made cakes.

The Fascinating Mr Ranger and Early British Concrete Heritage

Regency Town House , 13 Brunswick Square, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH

William Ranger was born in Ringmer, Sussex, at the end of the 18th century but spent many of his formative years in Brighton; where he worked with a young Charles Barry, then just embarking on his long architectural career. During this period, Ranger and Barry developed key local sites such as St Peter's Church and the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Working sometimes jointly with Barry and at other times alone, Ranger also undertook many other local projects including repairs to the property of Mrs Dulany, the extension of the Royal Pavilion, the building of Admiral Codrington's home, the creation of sunken gardens for Kemptown residents and the formation of the Brighton Sea Walls. In almost all of these sites he deployed 'Ranger's Artificial Stone', a product for which he subsequently acquired patents in 1832 and 1834. Join us for a 45 minute talk about this fascinating man.

The Orange Lilies - Brighton and Hove in the Somme

Mezzanine Level, 8 Marshalls Row, Open Market, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN1 4JU

Strike a Light, in partnership with Brighton & Hove Library and Information Service, and Fabrica showcases its WWI themed project The Orange Lilies – Brighton and Hove Soldiers in the Somme.

The project focuses the city’s legacy of the Somme and a significant event on the eve of this (where huge numbers of Brighton soldiers fell), The Battle of Boar’s Head (also known as The Day that Sussex Died), as a key part of WWI, and its subsequent impact on Brighton and Hove.

Come along and find out more about this epic piece of local history, and find out ways to get involved with the project, learn about film making and gain research skills. Arts and heritage organisation Strike a Light and partners will – through key activities, training, collaboration and mentoring – work with young people to commemorate the effects of the Battle of the Somme on the city, uncovering Brighton’s Great War heritage for future generations.

Using archives and artefacts to inform creative learning, our unique approach involves young people researching and producing a series of short films to share this WWI centenary theme; creating textile interpretations of significant battles; and attending talks and study days; whilst receiving support from local historians, including a local Royal Sussex Regimental military expert.
